What Feat of Strength Should You Try First?

Wednesday, January 13th, 2016

Which Feat Should You Start With First?

I’m often asked what is the best feat of strength to start with.

I think card tearing is the best way to get started with feats of strength.

Not bending nails, not tearing phone books, and not horseshoes.

There’s three reasons why I suggest you start out with tearing cards.

Why You Should Start With Card Tearing Before Anything Else

1) Cards are Cheap

Cheaper end cards, the kind that are perfect for beginners, cost only $1 at Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and similar stores. Sometimes they’re even cheaper than that!

2) No Other Gear Required

With nail bending and many other feats, you need wraps, cutters, rubber bands, etc. With card tearing, you don’t need any of that. You just take the card out of the box and start tearing.

3) Perfect for Hand Conditioning

Although made of paper, tearing cards still requires appreciable tension in the hands. Cards allow you to get used to straining and putting for sustained pressure, repeatedly in order to get the job done.

Once you’re used to this, you’ll be ready for the stresses associated with nail bending, horseshoes, and braced bends as well.

If you want to get started with feats of strength, Card Tearing is your ticket.

And I’ve got the perfect resource for you, to help you get started right: Card Tearing ebook.

All the best in your training.

Classic Strongman Month – Week 2

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Hello DIESELS!

Did you see how the first week in the Classic Strongman Feats Tournament panned out? If not, here is the video:

Congrats to David on the First Round Win in this Five-Round competition!

The standings from Week 1:

  • 1 – David Horne – 3 Points
  • 2 – Mike Rinderle – 1.5 Points
  • 2 – Jason Steeves – 1.5 Points
  • 3 – Richard McLean – 1 Point

This week’s feat is Card Tearing.

According to David Horne, the earliest recorded Grip Competition was a Card Tearing contest featuring various styles of tearing a deck of cards.

After all, there are many ways to tear a deck of cards:

  • Tearing a Deck in Half Vertically
  • Tearing a Deck Lengthwise
  • Tearing Multiple Decks in Half
  • Cornering a Deck
  • Quartering a Deck
  • Tearing While Wearing Gloves
  • And the list goes on and on

In fact all these techniques are explained in my Card Tearing eBook, and I can show you how to do all of that stuff.

Despite all of many ways to tear a deck of cards, we will focus on only two of them: Tearing a Deck in Half and then Quartering one of those Halves, as quickly as possible.

Now, there are many styles of Decks of Cards out there, and the difficulty of these different decks varies quite a bit.

With that in mind, the standard deck we are going to use this week is Bicycle Brand. If you tear a deck of Bicycles in half and then quarter one half, then you will beat anyone you face who does not complete this feat with bicycles or someone who completes it with non-Bicycles. However, if you do complete the full feat with a deck of non-Bicycle Brand cards, then you will beat someone you face who could only rip the Bicycles in half.

So, again, the Ultimate Goal here is to tear a deck of Bicycles in half and then rip one half into half again.

If you do not have access to Bicycles, just rip what you have.

Aside from this there are only a few other rules:

  • The Full Tear Must be Non-Braced (no bracing the cards or the hands against your thigh or stomach
  • The Deck must be a new deck, showing the plastic wrap and seal being broken on camera
  • You may use chalk, but no adhesive on the fingers
  • As much of the tear should be done on camera (to prevent someone potentially dropping the deck out of the screen and then picking up another doctored deck)
  • Other rules will be added as they come to me – try to stick to the legitimate form of the challenge please!

I am currently on vacation and I have not had the opportunity to film a demonstration, but this will happen if/when I am able.

Otherwise, get me your video submissions by 8 PM on Saturday, August 13th, 2011.

Get to tearin’ and Get to filmin’!!!

Card Tearing Feedback and Progress

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Hello DIESELS!

I got some pretty good feedback the other day on one of my more mature products, the Card Tearing Ebook System.

I had gotten tagged in a post by someone on Facebook named Chris Davis, and it said:

“Reading through Jedd Johnson’s Card Tearing Manual. Great stuff.”

So, I searched through my email for this fellow’s name and I found the order and his email address and sent him this quick note from my Droid…

“Chris, Thanks for your purchase. Please let me know if you have any questions! Thanks again. Jedd Johnson”

I then got a great email back from him, saying:

“I have heard nothing but praise for you sir from some very high people. Definitely have my eyes on the nail bending ebook/dvd.”

So I dug a little deeper and I found out that Chris is also an RKC through Dragondoor and a former Marine. So I also sent him a Thank-You note for his service for our country.

It’s funny – when you design a product, write a book/ebook, or film an instructional DVD, you often end up learning more than you knew before you started. For instance, when I wrote the Card Tearing eBook, I learned about several techniques that I didn’t know about before. Some of them, I could not do!

For instance, a dude I was training with often at the time, John Eaton had an interesting style of holding the card out in front of his face while tearing them.

This style was much more difficult than what I had learned, so I ask him to shoot the technique on film so that I could put them into the ebook, and he obliged.

I firmly believe in continuing to hone your skills, and over time I was able to perform the John Eaton Technique. As you can see below…

John Eaton Card Tearing Technique

This technique has gotten easier and easier over the last few months.

I take pride in all of my products and strive to make sure they deliver far more value than the bare minimum. For instance, in the Card Tearing eBook, I also included a chapter on restoration. With these exercises, you can do more tearing more often without worrying about overuse injuries.

And honestly, even if you never feel like ripping a deck of cards in half, the exercises in the exercise index will just plain make your hands stronger for carryover into the rest of your lifting, sports activities, and even if you are handling weapons while serving our country.

If you are looking for something that will show you how to build stronger hands while also showing you how to tear a deck of cards like the Strongman Performers of the Past, then check this ebook out…

All the best in your training.
