Double Blob Farmers Walk

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

During the Arnold Classic I gathered with a bunch of friends from around the nation at a little park in Columbus and we all had a few tries at some grip feats. One of the feats I was interested in trying was the Double Blob Farmer’s Walk. The record for this right now is a bit over 107 feet!

I tried five or six attempts. The one in this video clips is my third. After this one, my distance dropped off.

For those of you who may not know, the Blob is one head of a York 100-lb dumbbell. Here are some other facts about the Blob.

    * Richard Sorin named the Blob and was the first to attempt to lift it.
    * Lifting the Blob is a test of pinch grip strength.
    * It is a great feat of grip strength to lift one Blob to the full deadlift position.
    * The Blob tapers outward from the top to the widest portion.

All the best in your training,

Arnold Classic Write-up Part I

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I just returned from my trip to the Arnold Classic, in Columbus, Ohio. We have been going for years and this year the trip was as great as ever. The Arnold Classic weekend is packed full of strength sport action, including strongman and powerlifting as well as many grip challenges at various expo center booths. However, this year I had my sights set on the biggest Arnold grip challenge of them all – the GNC Grip Gauntlet.

Blob Plus More Weight

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Here is the Blob plus weight for a calibrated total of 74.95 lbs. At the time of lifting this weight and writing this post, it puts me in 2nd place, right behind Wade Gillingham with 77lbs and Richard Sorin with 74.25 lbs.

As you can see, this one didn’t come easy. Several times the string kept sliding off the blob, ending up in my hand instead of directly on top of the blob. I missed it almost 10 times (some of them I deleted). Finally, when I added duct tape to the top of the blob, it kept the strong in place so it wouldn’t shift around on me.

Keep checking back. I usually try to add a little more weight each weekend. Next weekend, will be with Rex and Paul at the Arnold Classic, so I am hoping to push the total a bit higher yet!

Anybody else going?

See you there…

Blob Plus 20 Pounds…Again!

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

The blob is 1/2 of a 100lb York dumbbell. Currently there is a major push in the grip community to lift as much weighted added to the blob as possible. The current top lift is about 75 total pounds. My best ever is blob plus 20 but I haven’t done it for about a year. Just this past weekend I worked up to 20 lbs added again and was able to hold it easy at the top.

Major Grip Feat: 50lb Blob Plus 20

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

In a recent workout, I decided to try going for a PR with the Blob. I was able to lift the 50-lb Blob with 20 pounds worth of 5-lb plates hanging from it on a string. The record for this lift is 25.5 pounds added to the Blob by Wade Gillingham. However, he did his lift with the weight attached via a bungee cord on the bottom. In my estimation, that would be a much harder manner to lift the Blob plus weight. Very Impressive! Here is my video.
