the disadvantage with using a sledge is that you cant load it.Once you have some shot sliding around in the mace it switches things up a gear, you have to work even harder against the shifting weight

I feel it is a great one. It really hits me hard in three ways.

First off, it hits my grip hard. I feel a real good pump in my thumb pads, pinky pads and wrists afterwards which gets a ton of fresh blood into these regions and helps me recover from my grip workouts.

The next way I really feel it is in my core. Swinging the mace and core club is really a full body movement and hits the core hard from all the coordinated twisting and explosion.

Finally, I feel it in my heart and lungs. Especially when you get up around 20 reps with the mace, your heart and lungs really start pumping.

However, depending on your level of conditioning, I am not sure an 8 or 12 lb sledge is going to give you this same result. They are a little light. Maybe with lots of reps though, you will start to feel it. Please give it a try and leave another comment Gene! Thanks.
