It reduces pain and increases leverage. A bend done with a small towel is going to be much tougher the one with leather. With that said, I use leather. I am not in denial about the whole wrapping thing. Plus, I only bend for contests so I don't have a lot of emotion wrapped up in the nail/bolt/stock.
